On July 3rd, 2023, at 2:00 pm, Ukrinform will hold a press conference on the subject: “Humanitarian mine action in Ukraine. Problems and solutions”.
Organizer: NGO Ukrainian Deminers Association (UDA)
Participants: Tymur Pistriuha – Head of the Organization; Iryna Kustovska – UDA Project Manager in Humanitarian Demining; Svitlana Nemtsova – UDA Project Manager in Mine Victim Assistance; Serhiy Chutkyi – UDA Head of the Explosive Ordnance Risk Education (EORE) Department.
Moderator: Valentyna Bykova – UDA EORE-instructor.
Occasion: As a result of russian aggression, Ukraine became the most mined country in the world. As of now, 175,000 square kilometers of our country (almost 29% of the territory) are potentially contaminated with explosive ordnance and require at least a non-technical and technical survey of the territories (processes of humanitarian demining).
Question to discuss:
1. Mine action also includes Explosive Ordnance Risk Education for civilian population, which is currently needed by all regions of Ukraine without exception.
2. Another component of mine action is providing assistance to victims of explosive ordnance (Mine Victim Assistance – MVA). Currently, UDA, in partnership with the international humanitarian organization International Rescue Committee and UN OCHA, is implementing two projects to provide assistance to the communities most affected by the war.
For reference: NGO Ukrainian Deminers Association (UDA) was created in November 2018. It works in all regions of Ukraine, except temporarily occupied ones. Main goals: implementation of projects in the field of mine action (humanitarian demining, EORE, MVA), perform other projects in the field of security (in particular, preparedness and protection of the population during conflict/war), public control of mine action in Ukraine; assistance in the development of mine action legislation; development and implementation of educational programs, etc.
The Association has signed 31 Memorandums, Agreements on partnership, cooperation and grant agreements with donors, state authorities, international and national NGOs, including: the US State Department, the US Embassy in Ukraine, USAID, UNDP (UN Development Program), the UN Office for Coordination humanitarian affairs / OCHA Ukraine, UHF (Ukraine Humanitarian Fund), Mines Advisory Group, Norwegian Peoples Aid, Save the Children in Ukraine, International Rescue Committee, ALPS Resilience and others.
