NTS and humanitarian demining of Ukraine

It’s hard to overestimate the importance of non-technical survey (NTS) of territories. Firstly, these are the first steps towards clearing our lands of explosive ordnance, and secondly, this is one of the methods of excluding lands from the category of dangerous. NTS is not just about gathering data about explosive ordnance, and not even about finding/disproving evidence. NTS is a systematic set of measures as a component of humanitarian demining, which ends with a NTS report. It is important to note that each such report is summited and verified into the Information Management System for Mine Action (IMSMA).

It is clear that on the scale of potentially dangerous territories of Ukraine, which currently according to our data is more than 139,000 sq.km, NTS is one of the most rational solutions.

That is why, as part of the NGO “Ukraine demining association” project, the sappers of our implementation partner Demining Solutions are actively implementing NTS in many areas of our country since the end of 2022:

  • since December 2022 – Kharkiv region;
  • since February 2023 – Mykolaiv region;
  • since March – Dnipro and Kyiv regions;
  • since May – Kherson region.

Currently, sappers are working in the territories of 8 communities of 5 regions mentioned above. During the NTS, a total area of more than 15 million sq. m was already covered by our deminers. In particular, we continue demining and clearing of explosive ordnance in the rural and agricultural lands of the Makariv community of the Kyiv region. The Makariv community is one of the most affected areas as a result of the invasion of the russian occupying forces in the Kyiv region.

This is just the beginning of our vital project. The UDA team, together with DS deminers will demine every inch of our territory. All 603.7 sq. km will be free of mines and explosive ordnance!
