On October 5, 2020, for the first time in Ukraine, an online training course Mine Risk Education (MRE) for secondary school teachers was launched. During two weeks of training, class teachers of grades 5-11 from 5 cities of Ukraine: Kramatorsk, Mariupol, Severodonetsk, Dnipro and Kyiv were trained within the pilot project of the Ukrainian Deminers Association’s “Mine Risk Education for Ukrainian Public Schools (age 12-18) – Train the Teacher on Mine Safety”.
The main result of the training is the acquisition of knowledge and skills on mine safety by 50 teachers, which allows them to conduct MRE session for children. This category of teachers received the appropriate certificates. It should be noted that certificates are automatically generated by a computer, which prevents the influence of the human factor on the issuance of the certificate and makes this process open and transparent.
Currently, the ranking of cities with MRE certificates is distributed as follows:
Kramatorsk – 15 (including the city of Lyman, Kramatorsk district);
Dnipro – 11;
Severodonetsk – 9;
Kyiv – 8;
Mariupol – 7.
Currently, the leaders in obtaining certificates are Kyiv Gymnasium “Consul” №86 (7 certificates) and Mariupol Secondary School № 57 (6 certificates).
The project also includes American partners: Spilna Mova, a company that conducts grant monitoring and is responsible for international cooperation on the grant task; Risk and Security Management helps create educational videos.
The training will last until the end of October 2020. Registration for the training course for selected teachers continues. Link for the registration.
We hope that an organization of an effective systematic training for teachers on mine safety will significantly increase safety level among children through their greater awareness of threats and conscious change of behavior to safe. And these are our children’s lives and health saved!
The implementation of the UDA’s project, which aims to save the lives of Ukrainians became possible thanks to the financial support of the United States of America, with the participation of the U.S. Embassy Kyiv Ukraine and U.S. Department of State.
